The ice cream spots to check out in Luxembourg this summer

|

In the heat of long, lazy summer days, when you’re craving a refreshing break, artisanal ice cream is more than just a treat - it’s a seasonal ritual. Luxembourg is home to a number of spots that deserve special mention for their top-quality products, inventive flavours, and deep local roots. These ice-cream parlours are a delightful way to (re)discover the city's narrow streets, leafy parks and Sunday strolls.

Bargello: bringing a taste of Tuscany to the city

With its Florentine roots and its name inspired by an iconic Renaissance neighbourhood, Bargello has become a go-to destination for artisan ice cream in Luxembourg. Launched in 2016, Bargello has made a name for itself thanks to an approach that is faithful to Italian gelato: low levels of incorporated air, silky textures, and excellent ingredients.

No colourings or preservatives here. Each flavour is created in-house, using whole milk from Luxembourg, fresh fruit, and carefully sourced products. The great classics - Sicilian pistachio, Piedmont hazelnut, 70 % dark chocolate - sit alongside more daring concoctions, such as lemon and basil, ricotta and fig, or pear and cinnamon.

Bargello can be found in its light-filled boutique in Bonnevoie, a stone's throw from Place de Paris, as well as in Limperstberg. In summer, a mobile food truck travels to festivals, night markets, and cultural events. It’s a parlour for the most demanding lovers of classic gelato.

Glacier Nice: artisanal quality in limited batches

Unassuming but incredibly effective, Glacier Nice has something for both adventurous and gourmet palates. Led by a Franco-Luxembourg pastry chef duo, the concept is based on ultra-fresh, limited production: just five or six flavours on the menu, which change every ten days.

Each ice cream flavour is one of a kind. Recent highlights include a wild mint and strawberry sorbet, a creamy preserved lemon, hazelnut praline chocolate, and a pink grapefruit–thyme sorbet. Everything is homemade, from the coulis to the extras (crumble, caramel chips or meringue), with the kind of exacting precision one would expect from a fine dining restaurant.

Glacier Nice currently has just one outlet on Avenue du X Septembre in Luxembourg.

Oberweiss: frozen refinement

When a leading light of Luxembourg patisserie takes on the world of gelato, the result exceeds all expectations. Oberweiss, an iconic institution in the Grand Duchy, crafts each ice cream with the same high standards that have made its patisserie expertise famous well beyond national borders. Here, ice cream is not just another product: it becomes a pursuit in its own right, crafted with the same perfectionism as the house's famous desserts, viennoiseries and chocolates. Rather than giving in to the race for ever more flavours, Oberweiss embraces a philosophy of inspired minimalism. The menu is short, but each flavour is chiselled, balanced and crafted to offer a rich and harmonious sensory experience. The texture, with its refined creaminess, is designed to melt in the mouth without heaviness. As for taste, it favours accuracy over exuberance.

One of the must-try flavours is Madagascar vanilla, set off with fine slivers of crunchy nougat, reminiscent of classic desserts but with a modern flair. The bright, concentrated raspberry sorbet is made from pure juice, with no artificial additives, for a perfect tangy freshness in summer. The salted butter caramel ice-cream also deserves a special mention - its sweet and savoury intensity is skilfully balanced so as never to saturate the palate. Available in all Oberweiss boutiques.

Bonomeria: the Sicilian spirit on three wheels

More popular in its approach, but no less focused on quality, Bonomeria immediately evokes the backstreets of Palermo or the beaches of Catania. Founded in 2014 by an Italian-Luxembourg family, this parlour offers generous ice creams, tangy granités and filled brioches typical of southern Italy.

The lemon sorbet is lively, the blood orange granita irresistible, and the brioche gelato (a soft pastry filled with ice cream) has countless devoted gourmet fans. Bonomeria's philosophy is based on artisanal production, low environmental impact (compostable cones, low-energy delivery tricycle) and a warm welcome. You can sample their creations in the Merl boutique on rue Wurth Paquet and in Bertange on rue A Laangert.

What unites these ice-cream makers is their passion for doing things right. Whether it's Italian-style gelato, special limited-edition flavours or local sorbets, they all share the same desire: to offer an artisanal, authentic, and lip-smacking experience. At a time when industrial ice creams are filling the shelves, these spots are a reminder that pleasure can also involve high standards, local connections and creativity.

So whether you're heading out of the office for a quick break or strolling with the family along a shady promenade, all you need is a cone to turn an ordinary summer's day into an unforgettable memory.
