Valentine's Day: the best places for a date in Luxembourg with Edenred

|

A little history

Valentine's Day, which is celebrated on 14 February, has its origins in antiquity. This festival is often associated with a Roman priest, Valentine of Terni who, as the story has it, defied Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century by celebrating clandestine Christian marriages. The emperor, who was opposed to these unions, had Valentine imprisoned and executed, making him a martyr. The Catholic Church then established 14 February as a holiday in his honour.

However, the roots of Valentine's Day can also be traced back to the pagan festivals of Lupercalia, celebrated in ancient Rome to mark fertility and the arrival of spring. In the Middle Ages, 14 February was associated with courtly love in Europe, not least because it was believed that birds mated on this day.

Today, Valentine's Day is a largely secular and commercial holiday, during which couples celebrate their love by exchanging gifts, flowers or letters, perpetuating a romantic tradition around the world.
